First day of training!

Today we're starting at the Language Center. We're going to have three full days of training, then (I think) two weeks of working with one of the established teachers before teaching classes by ourselves.

We're also planning on signing our employment contracts today- everything has looked very good so far, but we haven't yet seen our weekly schedule (What day, what time, where) beyond a specified number of hours at the Language Center and a specified number of hours teaching.

The Language Center has been very accommodating- they've even scheduled a mandarin class for us every Friday, to take place during our working hours. I've also heard talk of a calligraphy class...

I'll update tonight after we get back.

Does seem kind of odd, doesn't it, that you are IN China BEFORE seeing the contract? I'm sure it will be fine, but I admire your trust in the organization to take the plunge. How amazing for both of you - at your young age, and newly married - to spend a year in China! The most up and coming world superpower, where you can meet the people, learn the language, the culture, the truth! Jonathan, this will be VERY valuable to you in the future! Shannon, the coolness factor just never ends....

I'm sorry, dad H., I don't quite get what you mean- the truth about what?

Oh Wow- Shannon would love the calligraphy, too.

Well, I guess I just mean what the truth is about China. I have in my head a brutal dictatorial communist country. But it seems what you are seeing is a different China than that altogether. It seems more like a capitalistic country with a fairly high standard of living - a far cry from rice paddies and a team of oxen.

Hi Jessups!

I am enjoying reading Jonathan's blog. You two could write for Fodors! :) I don't know if you are able to access your regular email but I have an important question to ask either of you. My email is IMASwede@yahoo.com

Have fun! :)

Kristin

So how was the training? Have you started teaching yet?
