Pre-Departure Update

I'm planning on documenting in this blog the experiences of my wife and I as we teach conversational English in China. While we're not in China yet, several people have asked me what's going on- when are we leaving, what are we doing with our car while we're gone, do we have an apartment, what will the weather be like, how much luggage will we take, etc., etc. Consequently, this pre-departure update.

On Sunday, September 7, we are flying to China to teach English for twelve months at the David Cambridge English Language Center in Wenzhou, Zhejiang. We will fly in to Shanghai and travel (by train? bus?) a few hundred kilometers south to Wenzhou. Wenzhou is located on the east coast of China, and I understand that on a clear day, Taiwan is visible at it's approximately-60-mile distance.

At the English Language Center, we will be teaching conversational english to chinese children between the ages of three and twelve, five and a half days a week. Our work schedule will be daily from 2:30 in the afternoon to 9:30 in the evening for five days during the week, and Sunday afternoon.

We will be living in a "fairly new" apartment building about a quarter mile from the school, well within walking distance. In the event of rain, I'm told that taxis are very inexpensive (umbrella and rickshaw, perhaps?). The apartment is furnished (by whatever standards are appropriate), has a cooktop, microwave oven, washing machine, air conditioning, and water purifier. I think there are a few other accoutrements, but I don't recall off the top of my head what they are.

Close to the apartment building (a quarter mile?) is a shopping center which has "everything you'd need." We'll find out soon what exactly that is. In the meantime, we need to finish packing.

:-)
